These photos are from the Big Island of Hawaii. We visited the Volcanic National Park in June of 2003. The first photo shows how a lava flow from April of that same year took out part of the parks road. After hiking about two miles out we finally reached the active lava flow. My husband had been the one excited to make this particular part of the trip. Once I was out there though it really was amazing and fascinating to be standing right next to lava. In fact as the sun began to go down I really started to notice how there were tiny fissures under some of the stone we were standing on and you could see the orange glow underneath us. Yes, there was lava flowing right below us. After the sun goes down you truly begin to see just how many hot spots there out there as there were glowing orange spots all over the place.
